Overview of Tamil Nadu MBBS & BDS Admissions
Medicine is a noble and dynamic field dedicated to the science and practice of diagnosing, treating, and preventing diseases, offering a fulfilling career that combines compassion with expertise. The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) is the gateway to this profession, recognized globally as the foundational degree for medical practitioners. In India, medical colleges accredited by the National Medical Commission (NMC, formerly Medical Council of India / MCI) confer the prestigious MBBS degree upon graduation.
The MBBS curriculum is meticulously designed to equip students with both theoretical knowledge and hands-on clinical skills. It begins with foundational pre-clinical subjects such as Anatomy, Physiology, and Biochemistry, progressing to Para-clinical subjects like Microbiology, Pathology, and Pharmacology, laying the groundwork for advanced medical understanding. Simultaneously, students gain direct clinical exposure by training in hospital wards and outpatient departments (OPDs), interacting directly with patients to apply their learning in real-world scenarios over a rigorous five-and-a-half-year period.
The course emphasizes mastering core competencies like history taking, physical examination, differential diagnosis, and patient management. A 12-month compulsory rotating medical internship (CRMI) further enriches the learning experience, providing hands-on training in various clinical specialties such as Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Pediatrics, and Obstetrics & Gynecology. This phase develops essential skills in ward management, triage coordination, and patient counselling, ensuring holistic professional maturity.
Admission to MBBS programs across India is strictly merit-based, governed solely through the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET UG) conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). Admissions into all government, self-financing, and deemed medical colleges in Tamil Nadu are allocated through centralized state and national counselling rounds.
